Clear Aligner Orthodontics: Answering The 8 Most Common FAQs

If you’re interested in straightening your teeth, but you don’t want to commit to a highly visible orthodontic treatment like traditional braces, a clear aligner system like Invisalign or ClearCorrect may be right for you. We get a lot of questions about clear aligners at Willow Creek Smiles, so here are a few answers that should keep you informed about this popular orthodontic treatment:

1. Are Clear Aligners Really Invisible When Worn?

Yes. Your aligners are made of clear, transparent plastic and they fit over your teeth perfectly and they will be completely invisible when worn. However, they can become stained if you do not clean them properly, or if you drink any beverage besides water while wearing them.

2. Will My Aligners Affect My Ability To Speak?

No. When you first wear your aligners, you may sound a bit “slushy” when you speak for a few days. But once you’ve adjusted to wearing your aligners, you will be able to speak clearly.

3. How Long Will My Treatment Take?

Typically, patients will get a total of around 20-24 sets of aligners. Each aligner is worn for 20-22+ hours per day, and you’ll swap to a new set of aligners about every two weeks. This means that most patients can be treated in under a year.

However, this will vary based on your orthodontic needs. To get an more accurate estimate, we recommend consulting with Dr. Nguyen.

4. Can I Eat Or Drink While Wearing My Aligners?

No. You can drink water, but should not drink anything else or eat while wearing your aligners, since this could cause damage. Take your aligners out whenever you eat and store them in the provided case. Then, rinse your aligners and your mouth before replacing them.

5. How Long Will I Have To Wear My Aligners Every Day?

For the best results, you should keep your aligners on for 22+ hours per day. The more you wear your aligners, the more quickly your teeth will shift. If you fail to wear your aligners for the recommended period of time, your treatment will fall behind schedule.

6. Will Aligners Hurt?

Compared to braces, clear aligners are much more comfortable. When you swap to a new set of aligners, you may feel some pressure and discomfort for a day or two, but this will quickly fade.

7. How Often Will I Have To See The Dentist?

Usually, you’ll have come back to our office about every 6 weeks for a checkup and to get your next sets of aligners. At these appointments, Dr. Nguyen will examine your mouth and make sure your treatment is progressing properly.

8. How Much Does Clear Aligner Treatment Cost?

The cost will vary based on your specific orthodontic needs and how many sets of aligners your treatment will require. For a more accurate price estimate, schedule an appointment with Dr. Nguyen for an orthodontic exam.
