What Common Problems Can Cosmetic Dentistry Fix?

Essentially, cosmetic dentistry is intended to fix any problem with your teeth that is not related to your oral health. There are a number of different things that may make you feel self-conscious or embarrassed about how your smile looks.

Some of the most common issues fixed with cosmetic dentistry include:

  • severe staining
  • uneven or misshapen teeth
  • gaps between teeth
  • slightly-crooked teeth
  • chipped teeth

Treatments like teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, dental bonding, cosmetic crowns, and other such cosmetic procedures can help resolve these issues.

It is important to note that cosmetic dentistry cannot replace restorative dental treatment. You are not a good candidate for cosmetic dentistry if you have serious oral health issues like decayed or damaged teeth, missing teeth, or gum disease. Usually, these problems must be resolved before you can improve your smile with cosmetic treatment.

The same is true of orthodontics. While cosmetic dentistry treatments like veneers can treat some minor tooth issues like gaps and slightly crooked/crowded teeth, they are not ideal for patients who have serious issues with their teeth position and jaw alignment. If you have very crooked teeth or a bad bite, orthodontic treatment usually must be performed before cosmetic treatments can be used.

What Are Veneers?

Veneers are one of the most common treatments in cosmetic dentistry due to their effectiveness, versatility, and durability. A veneer is, essentially, a false tooth that is designed to cover up the front chewing surface of your tooth. It fits over the existing enamel after it has been trimmed. Multiple veneers are typically used to cover up the fronts of all of your teeth.

By covering up the front surfaces of your teeth, veneers can treat a huge variety of cosmetic problems ranging from chips in the teeth and misshapen/uneven teeth to gaps in your smile, serious stains and discoloration, and more.

The result is a long-lasting, natural-looking smile. Your new veneers will look and feel just like natural teeth, and they also do not require any special care beyond regular brushing and flossing and seeing Dr. Tom Nguyen at Willow Creek Smiles for routine teeth cleanings and oral exams every six months.

Veneers require 2 appointments over a period of 2-3 weeks to be applied, so you can restore your smile quickly. They also do not require any serious oral surgery, only some trimming of your natural teeth to ensure your mouth can accommodate the veneers properly.

Are veneers the right option for me?

Veneers can correct a number of imperfections and give you a confident smile. If you have chipped, stained, misaligned, or unevenly spaced teeth, veneers might be the right option for you. Custom porcelain veneers are thin shells of resin that are made to perfectly fit over your teeth and improve the appearance of your smile. During your procedure, Dr. Nguyen will remove a small amount of enamel to make room for the veneers, take an impression of your teeth, and adhere the veneers to the front of your teeth to restore your smile. What Is Dental Bonding, Shaping, & Contouring?

Dental bonding is the process of using a special composite dental resin to reshape your teeth. This resin is similar to the material used to fill teeth. Dr. Nguyen will apply it directly to your tooth, and then use a variety of dental tools to sculpt and trim the bonding material, until it’s shaped just like a natural tooth.

Bonding is fast, affordable, and offers great results, so it’s a very popular option for patients who want to restore their smile on a budget.

Shaping and contouring are also often used alongside dental bonding. This procedure consists of buffing away a thin layer of enamel from some of your teeth to remove imperfections like minor chips and wear, pointed teeth, and uneven teeth. Combined with bonding, shaping and contouring can totally transform your smile.

How can bonding and reshaping improve my smile?

Bonding and reshaping are one of the most convenient, affordable options for correcting chipped, uneven or poorly aligned teeth. During reshaping and contouring treatments, Dr. Nguyen will gently remove small portions of enamel on certain areas of your teeth to give them a more appealing and natural shape. Any gaps or chips can be filled in with tooth-colored resin in a process called bonding. Your teeth are then smoothed and polished for a bright, uniform and natural look. Visit our office to learn more about what bonding and reshaping can do for you and your smile.
